I am about to graduate from high school. My parents are constantly checking with me what course I want to take in college and honestly, it's getting annoying. Don't get me wrong, I know that I am among the fortunate few who can afford university education. Mother is an artist and is one of the most well-known in our state. Her paintings are sold at auctions and one painting alone can support our family of 3 for 3 months. That is how in demand she is as a painter. A lot of famous people buy her work and that, of course, is additional income for her. My father is the town mayor. His family, or our family, has been in politics since the first generation of McKinleys moved here in our town. Obviously, our family is very well-known and a lot of people are watching us. We are not celebrities, but a lot of people want to know about our lives.
My goal is to become a dentist. I have never told this to my parents. It's because they want me, their only child, to get into politics like Dad. They want me to take up a course related to politics. Problem is, I have never been interested in politics, never in my whole life. Even when I was in grade school, my classmates would try to persuade me to run for the school council, but I just could not bring myself to do it. I knew politics isn't for me.
Now, I am caught in the middle. I want to take up dentistry but my parents who will support my education wants me to take up a different course. This is very hard decision for me. I just hope that my parents understand that I would like to make my own decisions and that I am brave enough to face the consequences.
